Locking Wire
Locking wire, also known as safety wire, is a highly effective method used to secure nuts and bolts in place. After tightening with the bolt, a piece of stainless steel wire is passed through a hole in the nut, and its ends are tightened to a fixed point, providing a reliable lock wire load that prevents the nut from becoming loose on its own.
This method of safety wiring is considered the most positive and satisfactory approach for ensuring the safety of cap screws, studs, nuts, bolt heads, and turnbuckle barrels, which cannot be safely secured by any other practical means. By wire locking together two or more units in a specific manner, any tendency of one unit to loosen is counteracted by the tightening of the wire. This results in a highly secure and reliable locking mechanism that keeps nuts and bolts in place, ensuring the safety of the equipment and the people using it.
